Our friend at UnCruise, Greg, had an exciting cruising opportunity that both we and he wanted to share with you. It’s in the realm of adventure cruising for all you thrill-seekers, which he saw firsthand… I wanted to write to let you know what a great full adventure vessel the S.S. Legacy has become. Spacious and our largest capacity vessel at 90 passengers, she is one of the first of UnCruise’s fleet to start operating sailings in Alaska in early April. She has a full team of expedition guides on all adventure cruises and river cruises who educate guests on wildlife, flora and fauna, how to use adventure equipment, and give evening presentations on topics like glaciers, marine biology, geology, photography, and much more.
I was lucky enough to sail on the Legacy this last September on the Columbia and Snake rivers new “Rivers of Adventure” itinerary.
She was a great vessel for the activities we did each day like beautiful hikes into the hills of the Columbia River gorge. The narration by the guides leading these hikes was spectacular. Hikes were offered in different lengths and terrain to suit each guest’s physical fitness abilities, and hiking poles were available for those who wanted to use them. We also got to go on long escorted group bike rides in this beautiful area. I was even able to experience UnCruise’s newest offering on this itinerary: white water river rafting on the Deschutes River – a river that feeds into the Columbia and offers class III and IV rapids. So much fun! Our expert river guide was able to teach us how to work together as a team with our paddles to control our direction on the river, as well as turn the raft in full 360s as we floated down the river. It was exciting and educational!
Capable of doing up to 13 knots, the Legacy gets us to each next adventure spot without delay. This is a great advantage for river cruises and adventure cruises because it allows our captains to access even more destinations during the seven-night itineraries in Alaska and on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The Legacy also stands out as one of our most comfortable ships. With an elevated, tiered bow and a huge, open top deck, guests have their choice of prime viewing spots. Plus, she has great lounge seating to view A/V presentations that preview or review daily adventures.
She also offers our newest “adventure platform”: the Sea Dragon! This is a self-contained external vessel that was designed to increase the ship’s adventure capabilities to an even higher level. The Sea Dragon launch pad for adventure carries all of the equipment like the kayaks, paddle boards, and paddles. It quickly attaches to the back of the
Legacy and can simultaneously launch three double kayaks and allow other guests to board our inflatable skiffs at the same time. Plus, the Sea Dragon is just steps down from the Pesky Barnacle, our pre- and post-adventure gearing up and down room. Check out this
video of the Sea Dragon in action in Alaska.
The Legacy operates adventure cruises and river cruises, and, before UnCruise Adventures, no company offered full adventure sailings in Alaska and on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The seven-night “Rivers of Adventure” gives you the opportunity to experience kayaking, hiking, white water river rafting, jet boat exploration of Hells Canyon, swimming, biking, and more. Take a look at this short video of this new itinerary. I hope this helps you better understand the full adventure capabilities of the Legacy.
