Helsinki – Summer Style
There are all kinds of reasons to visit Europe in the off season, principally lower costs and wider availability. That is all valid.
Summer in the Nordic countries is unbeatable for long days, spectacular sightseeing, outdoor events, natural energy and outside cravings of the locals for sun and fresh air. A recent summer visit to Helsinki, Finland validated all that. It was a wonderful adventure into a progressive, energetic and exciting few days.
The last time I was in Helsinki, several years, it was during February. In July, it was like another world. Sunrise was about 5:30 am and sunset was about 10:45 pm. This was plenty of time to explore this city of impressive public art and impressive excursions. There were even live and free concerts in the parks.
My temporary home here was the new, and very comfortable, St. George Hotel, centrally located for all tourism. Wood, glass, comfortable beds with good service was all there. They even have their own in-house bakery. Breakfast was a treat. Elsewhere in the city is the new preferred Hotel Marie near the harbor. Truly a mesmerizing ambience, with about 120 chandeliers used throughout the hotel. Lots of local Finnish art used here and in buildings all over the city.
There are many parks, historic buildings and museums. Food is amazing, so fresh and innovative; they included reindeer even in hot dogs and stuffed potatoes! Seafood is not that prevalent, mostly river fish like trout. There was one particular craving that I had as well: blueberry juice. Trying the blueberry juice is a must when you come visit; it will not disappoint.
From Helsinki, you can go to Lapland or take a 2 1/2 hour ferry to Tallinn, Estonia.
I flew Finnair non-stop from LAX in Premium Economy, which was comfortable, even about 5 hours sleep in the bulkhead row. Coming back I flew Business Class through Dallas. Finnair Business Class seats do not recline. This one-of-a-kind system is either a big chair or a bed. Interesting, but not my favorite. There are other carriers you can take.
All in all, Helsinki was a treat, comfortable not too crowded, inviting, diverse and welcoming for visitors. I vote for a summer visit.
