Naples National Archaeological Museum

While Italy’s third largest city, Naples is not high on most must-see lists. If it is on the itinerary, it’s usually as a gateway to visiting the Amalfi coast or Pompeii and Herculaneum. Central Naples has also become a playground for taggers who have just about covered every square foot of every building that’s within arm’s reach with graffiti. It is a shocking sight.

However, other than sampling the best pizza (it originated here), or Sfogliatella pastry, not-to-be-missed is the fabulous National Archaeological Museum, about a 20-minute walk for those visiting by cruise ship. The museum contains one of the world’s best collections of Roman (and Greek) antiquities.

While Pompeii or Herculaneum certainly warrant a visit, it’s at this museum one can truly appreciate the amazing mosaics and paintings that graced those cities, and the museum provides insights into life in ancient Italy. In addition to some exquisite sculptures, too, there’s also the secret cabinet room, where one can view the titillating salacious art from Pompeii’s heyday. It’s quite an intriguing and eye-opening display!
