Rubin Museum of Art (RMA), New York
New York has many museums to be sure, and it’s hard not to make a pilgimmage to MOMA or the Metropolitan when visiting the city. However, the Rubin is one of my favorites, and when I’ve come to new York, I’m drawn to take solace here to escape the noise and pace of the city for a couple of hours and enjoy some spectacular Buddhist art.
The Rubin is a small museum with seven small floors of exhibits. Off the lobby is a small gift store with some fine books on Asian art and Buddhism, and a cafe where a nice pot of tea can be enjoyed.
The exhibits are well displayed and change periodically. Currently opening is a first ever exhibit of art from Bhutan, accompanied by Buddhist monks who will perform daily ceremonies to ensure the sanctity of the works is protected.
