The Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo – A Luxurious Retreat
I just returned from Tokyo, Japan where we had the great pleasure to stay at the relatively new Shangri La Hotel Tokyo for 4 nights. Words cannot adequately describe the emotions this hotel and its staff generate.
The Shangri La is located in Central Tokyo, conveniently next to the Tokyo rail station where the bullet train (Shinkansen) connects to most areas of Japan. With only 200 rooms and suites, the hotel’s amazing staff provides gracious hospitality as well as a luxurious retreat in this bustling metropolis. The hotel is also within walking distance to the Imperial Palace and Gardens and The Ginza shopping district.
Most of all, I was touched by the level of caring and service I experienced from the staff. The General Manager, Wolfgang Kruger, seems to be truly in search of perfection. The staff seems to be empowered to deliver extraordinary experiences time and time again. It starts and ends with the concierge meeting and greeting you at the airport for both your arrival and departure. In between it’s the small details such as getting the earphones on the gym equipment adjusted just for you or being greeted by name everywhere in the hotel beginning on the day of arrival.
The valley of Shangri-La is a peaceful place full of romance. As in James Hilton’s masterpiece Lost Horizons written in 1931, it was an earthly paradise and a refuge for the soul. The Shangri La Hotel Tokyo represents this tradition not only in the beauty of the property itself, but also in the beauty of the people who serve its guests.
